SCOPE OF JOURNAL
ABBS is a scientific journal publishing monthly research papers, rapid communications and reviews in biochemistry, molecular biology and biophysics. Research papers and rapid communications should report original work not published or considered for publication elsewhere. Reviews should provide a concise introduction to the subject matter to inform the readers of the latest developments in a certain area.
EDITORIAL REVIEW AND ACCEPTANCE
The acceptance criteria for a manuscript are the quality and originality of the research and its significance to our readership. Except where otherwise stated, manuscripts are single-blind peer reviewed by at least two anonymous reviewers and the editor. Final acceptance or rejection rests with the Editorial Board, who reserves the right to accept or reject any material for publication.
SUBMISSION OF MANUSCRIPTS
Manuscripts should be written in readable English and must be submitted online through our ScholarOne Manuscripts System. For full ScholarOne Manuscripts Instructions, click here. Once you have prepared your manuscript according to the instructions please visit the online submission website.
Initial submission should include a cover letter (filling in the cover letter section) stating that: (i) the content has not been published or submitted for publication elsewhere and (ii) all authors are in the agreement with the content of the manuscript, attached with (i) the precise contribution of all authors to this manuscript respectively and (ii) the brief CV of the corresponding author. Authors must declare any financial support or relationships that may pose conflict of interest. If tables or figures have been reproduced from other sources, a letter from the copyright holder (usually the Publisher) stating authorization to reproduce the material must be attached to the covering letter.
The final version of the accepted manuscript will be uploaded by the editorial office after pre-editing (careful check of the main text and figure quality). Authors will be contacted by the editors during pre-editing.

OPEN ACCESS
ABBS authors have the option to publish their paper under the Oxford Open initiative; whereby, by paying a charge, their paper will be made freely available online immediately upon publication. After your manuscript is accepted the corresponding author will be required to accept a mandatory license to publish agreement. As part of the licensing process you will be asked to indicate whether or not you wish to pay for open access. If you do not select the open access option, your paper will be published with standard subscription-based access and you will not be charged. If you choose the Open Access option you can pay the Open Access charges using our Author Services site. This will enable you to pay online with a credit/debit card, or request an invoice by email or post. Open access charges can be viewed here in detail; discounted rates are available for authors based in some developing countries (click here for a list of qualifying countries).
Orders from UK will be subject to the current UK VAT charge. For orders from the rest of the European Union, OUP will assume that the service is provided for business purposes. Please provide a VAT number for yourself or your institution and ensure your account for your own local VAT correctly.
ABBREVIATIONS
Abbreviations should be used carefully: only where they can ease readers�� reading by reducing repetition of long, technical terms. Initially use the word in full, followed by the abbreviation in parentheses. Thereafter use the abbreviation only.
Genetic nomenclature Standard genetic nomenclature should be used. For further information, including relevant websites, authors should refer to the genetic nomenclature guide in Trends in Genetics (Elsevier Science, 1998).
Nucleotide sequence data can be submitted in electronic form to any of the three major collaborative databases: DDBJ, EMBL or GenBank. It is only necessary to submit to one database as data are exchanged between DDBJ, EMBL and GenBank on a daily basis. The suggested wording for referring to accession-number information is: 'These sequence data have been submitted to the DDBJ/EMBL/GenBank databases under accession number U12345.' FORMAT OF MANUSCRIPTS
Examples of the correct format for submitted papers are available on our website. Original Articles should be arranged in the following order: (i) title, author(s) and affiliation(s); (ii) running title; (iii) abstract and keywords; (iv) introduction; (v) materials and methods; (vi) results; (vii) discussion; (viii) acknowledgements; (ix) funding; (x) references; (xi) figure and table legends; (xii) tables; (xiii) figures. Short Communications should be arranged in the following order: (i) title, author(s) and affiliation (s); (ii) running title; (iii) abstract and keywords; (iv) introduction; (v) materials and methods; (vi) results and discussion; (vii) acknowledgements; (viii) funding; (ix) references; (x) figure and table legends; (xi) tables; (xii) figures. Lab Note and New Phenomenon should be arranged in the following order: (i) title, author(s) and affiliation(s); (ii) main contents; (iii) acknowledgements; (iv) funding; (v) references; (vi) figure and table legends. The locations of figures and tables in the text should be indicated. Footnotes to the text are not allowed and any such material should be incorporated into the text as parenthetical matter.
Title: The title should be short and informative, less than 20 words, and should not include non-standard acronyms or abbreviations.
Authors and affiliations: (i) the full names of all authors; (ii) the addresses of the institutions at which the work was carried out together with the full postal address incluing post codes; (iii) the email address, telephone and facsimile umbers of the author to whom correspondence about the manuscript should be sent. The present address of any author, if different from that where the work was carried out, should be supplied as a footnote.
Running title: A running title should be provided and should be less than 60 characters.
Abstract: The abstract should describe clearly the aim, major findings and conclusions of the research. It must not exceed 250 words.
Keywords: Five or fewer key words should be listed below the abstract. Keywords should be taken from those recommended by the Index Medicus Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) browser list at http://www.nlm.nih.gov/mesh/meshhome.html
Introduction: The basic principles of research, background, earlier related work and the purpose of the present studies should be described in the introduction.
Materials and Methods: Experimental procedures should be brief but complete enough to be repeated; procedures published previously should be cited in references. Source of materials should be given in bracket where they first appear.
Results: It is recommended that results be presented in figures and tables along with a suitable description in the text.
Discussion: The discussion should be concise (no more than three pages) and focus on the interpretation of the results.
References: The Vancouver system of referencing should be used (examples are given below). In the text, references should be marked using [Arabic numerals] in the order in which they appear.
In the reference list, if a reference has many authors, list only the first seven authors, followed by 'et al.' Reference to unpublished data and personal communications should not appear in the list but should be cited in the text only (e.g. Smith A, 2000, unpublished data). All citations mentioned in the text, tables or figures must be listed in the reference list.
Names of journals should be abbreviated according to the style used in Index Medicus. Authors are responsible for the accuracy of the references.

Footnotes: A footnote below the key words can only include the present address(es) of any author(s) if different from that in the affiliation(s).
Tables: Tables should be self-contained and complement, but not duplicate, information contained in the text. Tables should be consecutively numbered in the text in Arabic numerals. Legends should be concise but comprehensive: the table, legend and footnotes must be understandable without reference to the text. Vertical grid lines should not be used to separate columns. Each column in a table must have a heading, with units of measurement in parentheses; all abbreviations must be defined in footnotes.
FIGURES
Please be aware that the requirements for online submission and for reproduction in the journal are different: (i) for online submission and peer review, please upload your figures either embedded in the word processing file or separately as low-resolution images (.jpg, .tif, .gif or. eps); (ii) for reproduction in the journal, you will be required after acceptance to supply high-resolution .tif files (1200 d.p.i. for line drawings and 300 d.p.i. for color pictures. We advise that you create your high-resolution images first as these can be easily converted into low-resolution images for online submission.
For useful information on preparing your figures for publication, go to http://cpc.cadmus.com/da/index.jsp. Figures will not be relettered by the publisher. The journal reserves the right to reduce the size of illustrative material. Any photomicrographs, electron micrographs or radiographs must be of high quality. Wherever possible, photographs should fit within the print area of 169 x 235 mm (full page) or within the column width of 82 mm. Photomicrographs should provide details of staining technique and a scale bar. Patients shown in photographs should have their identity concealed or should have given their written consent to publication.
Figures should be cited in consecutive order in the text, if possible. Graphs should be drawn professionally or with a computer graphics package. Pictures should be supplied electronically. Individual photographs forming a composite figure should be of equal contrast. Magnifications should be indicated using a scale bar on the illustration.
Figure legends should be concise but comprehensive: the figure and its legend must be understandable without reference to the text. Include definitions of any symbols used and define/explain all abbreviations and units of measurement.
The quality of reproduction is limited by the quality of the submitted material. All figures must be of high quality - they should be sharply focused, have good contrast and any lettering must be clear and legible. Color illustrations can be reproduced if there is sufficient scientific merit in doing so. Authors will be expected to bear the cost of color origination by the Journal��s printers.
Guidance for preparation of Figures
Figures should be sized to fit a single column of the Journal where possible (88 mm) or a double column if necessary (180 mm). The preferred font for lettering is Times; lettering should have an upper case height of 2 mm and a lower case height of 1 mm at publication size (corresponding to point size 8). Line thickness should be set at 0.5 points. Shading used on line drawings should be clear and distinctive; shades of grey and heavy stippling do not reproduce well. Lines and symbols should be drawn boldly enough to withstand reduction. The preferred symbols are filled circles, open circles, filled squares, open squares, filled triangles and open triangles, and should be no smaller than 1 mm (height/diameter) at publication size. Part labels should be lower case letters within parentheses, e.g. (a), (b), (c) etc.
FUNDING
The following rules should be followed:

Grant numbers should be complete and accurate and provided in brackets as follows: ��[grant number ABX CDXXXXXX]��
Multiple grant numbers should be separated by a comma as follows: ��[grant numbers ABX CDXXXXXX, EFX GHXXXXXX]��
Agencies should be separated by a semi-colon (plus ��and�� before the last funding agency)
Where individuals need to be specified for certain sources of funding, the following text should be added after the relevant agency or grant number 'to [author initials]'.
An example is given here: ��This work was supported by the National Institutes of Health [P50 CA098252 and CA118790 to R.B.S.R.] and the Alcohol & Education Research Council [HFY GR667789].
Oxford Journals will deposit all NIH-funded articles in PubMed Central. See Depositing articles in repositories �C information for authors for details. Authors must ensure that manuscripts are clearly indicated as NIH-funded using the guidelines above.
CONFLICT OF INTEREST
Conflicts of interest have the potential to affect authors, referees and Editors. ABBS has the following systems in place to deal with conflicts of interest:
Authors. Authors are required to include a Transparency declarations section in every submission to the Journal.
Referees. When invited to act, and again when they agree to act, referees are reminded to consider whether they have any potential conflicts of interest. Referees are asked to discuss any perceived potential conflict with the Editor of the article who will reach a decision as to whether it is appropriate that the referee acts on the article or whether they should withdraw.
Editors. The Editor-in-Chief and Editors register their interests (including personal and business interests) with the Society. When an article is assigned to an Editor the Editor is reminded to consider whether there are any potential conflicts of interest, and if so, to discuss them with the Editor-in-Chief, who will come to a decision as to whether it is appropriate for the Editor to act on the article, or whether it should be reassigned.
SUPPLEMENTARY DATA
Only directly relevant experimental data should be included in the full text of manuscripts. Supporting data should be submitted for review as supplementary material, in a separate file from the manuscript, for publication online only. Material that has not been peer-reviewed will be made available only through a link to the author's home page, at the discretion of the Editor. Supplementary Material can be published in these formats: .txt, .htslp, .shtml, .html, .htm, .jpg, .jpeg, .gif, .mov, .mpg, .avi, .pdf, .xls, .zip, .doc, .rtf, .tif, .dtl.
PROOFS
Authors will receive a PDF file of the complete paper by email. In the interest of speed, corrections must be returned within 48 hours.
OFFPRINTS
The Journal will provide the authors with free online access to their article, with the option of purchasing printed offprints. Offprints can be ordered using the Oxford Journals Author Services site. Late orders submitted after the Journal has been printed are subject to increased prices.
PUBLICATION FEES
A manuscript handling fee of US$ 30 (200RMB) is required for a manuscript selected to be peer-reviewed. A publication fee of US$ 60 (400RMB) per printed page is required (this fee will be waived if authors decide to choose OPEN ACCESS mode and pay the OPEN ACCESS fee to OUP). No additional charge is required for black-white figures. A surcharged of US$ 200 (1200 RMB) is required for each color page reproduced in the journal.
Authors unable to pay publication fee may apply at the time of submission for a waiver. Application form must be signed by the senior official of the institution with which the corresponding author is affiliated and sent to the editorial office by postal mail.
